Links on Health, Training & Breeding
Last Modified: 10/5/08
Among all these sites are essays that you may or may not agree with. I myself do not agree with everything stated. It seems that many breeders believe that the way they care for their pets is the only way. Some of us who are a little more open to the human mind know that this is far from true. So when you check out these sites keep in mind that everyone is entitled to their opinion and thoughts. It is your responsibility to glean what you feel is right to you. Also beware that I may post sites whose information is not free but may still be of help to you and therefore I find it relevant.
If you find that you have trouble with any of the links I have available or if the site seems to no longer exist please take the time to email me. I do my best to check my links periodically but you may find a problem before I do. Not to mention I am human and I am likely to miss one. With everyone's help I can do my best to keep this site as informative as possible.
Clubs and Government
American Kennel Club
The American Kennel Club home page. Covers breed qualities, showing guides, help finding a nearby breeder and more.
American Shih Tzu Club
The American Shih Tzu Club home page. They cover everything that is Shih Tzu. You will find correct information on the breed standard, colors, markings and stature. Here is where you will find the official stand for every controversy that has ever surrounded the breed.
Shih Tzu Rescue
A site dedicated to keeping shih tzus and other related small breeds out of shelters and abusive homes and into loving environments.
United States Humane Society
The United States Humane Society home page. They cover more than dogs but well worth checking out.
Nutrition
Hungry Paws
The Hungry Paws home page. This is the brand of dog food I currently use. I am impressed with both Hungry Paws and the Pet Pantry, but Hungry Paws is available for delivery only in North Georgia and Pet Pantry now only in Florida. Both companies ship everywhere else.
Nature Select
The local Nature Select home page. I have only recently found this company and very thankfully too. My preferred brand is not available to everyone I meet, but this company has more distributors and travels further, so if you do not live within my area please take the time to learn about Nature Select. If I was not perfectly happy with Hungry Paws I would switch immediately.
Pet Pantry
The Pet Pantry home page. This used to be a country wide franchise which has since dissolved. It now exists solely in Orlando, Florida and if you live there or would like to have it shipped to you, I highly recommend it.
Flint River Ranch
I do not feed my dogs this brand nor have I ever, but it is worth your notice. Flint River is a very good quality dog food that is available via agent in some areas and via shipping everywhere else. I chose the use of the two companies above for my own reasons, but Flint River is an all natural, no preservative dog food that you should take the time to research.
Iams All Natural
This is the only food globally available in stores that I have ever given my dogs and trusted. I still feed this brand to my cats as they are too sensitive for switching. I switched to an all natural food for my own reasons, but if the cost is not effective or reasonable for you, this is the only brand I will ever recommend. I have tried everything else and I know that vets swear by other brands, but I have tried other brands and have never been as happy or my pets so healthy.
Dog Health & Training
The Doggy Post
Dog Health and Training Articles. I find this is a wonderful site that offers many, many helpful articles for training your new puppy. Definitely well worth your time.
Skin Allergies
The Long Beach Animal Hospital explains the origins of skin allergies.
Dog-breeds.net
A helpful site that offers ideas and tools to help potty train your new puppy. As all puppies are not created equal you can never have too much information on the art of training them!
101 Dog Training tips
Dog training tips about housebreaking, puppy training, & dog behavior will help develop your dog's full potential - Information articles, dog obedience training video & canine links.
Breeding
Pet Center on Whelping
I was pleasantly surprised at all the wealth of extra information concerning the whelping and breeding of puppies on this page. They explain other vet options and many circumstances much better than I could without plagerizing!
Pawprints and Purrs on Breeding
At first you may think you are about to read about cats and I have sent you on a goose chase but scroll down just a little and you will see what I am leading to. There are one or two things that I do not agree with as this is a vet based website. Remembering that this is from a veterinarian point of view I think you will find much of this very useful.
Breeding Tutorial
This is not a website but rather an online research paper. It is published by the ICDCA which is a UKC parent club for the Cannaan dog breed. Again, I do not agree with everything they say but it is worth your time in order for you to make the best decisions for you and your dog.
Digitaldog on Breeders and Shelters
This is a site that talks more about how to find the right dog. Some of their opinions are close to my own and some differ but if you really want to be very well educated before you start your search I hope you are taking the time to listen to more than one person.
Your Purebred Puppy vs Mixed Breeds
This site is one that I do not particularly agree with as I am not all that happy with purposefully breeding for mixed breed puppies. I do admit that they are very well informed in their opinions and if you really are interested in a mixed breed they can be of tremendous help.
Pet Loss Resources
It is okay to hurt when a beloved pet dies. I have lost many in my life, all in young years since I lived on a farm. My parents were very understanding of our grief, especially since this happened frequently. Others may criticize, but there are many in the world who understand. I have compiled as many sites as I could find that dedicate themselves to helping you through your grief. If you find a site has become callused or is not helpful, please email me immediately. No one should have to suffer further pain.
Crematories and Cemeteries
Paws 2 Heaven
This is a wonderful site if you are looking for a pet cemetary or crematory for your pet. Should you want a better way to say goodby, you can find a list by state here.
Support Groups and Tributes
The Association for Pet Loss and Bereavement
There is an extensive list of support groups available by state, thought there is not one in every state. Should there be one availabel near you, they are a great way to help you cope with your loss.
Chance's Spot Pet Loss and Support
A great web forum support group meets once a week and there are also tributes to pets who have passed. If you cannot find a support group in your area, this is my highest recommendation!
Pet Loss Support Hotline
Yes, you can call and talk to someone. The Cornell University is available for phone support, support groups, other hotlines and other resources.
Harmony's World of Pets
This is a great site for a support group forum. Their forum seems to be new, but I would take the time to help get it going, there are many out there, besides, you who can use the help.
Pet Lovers Forum
This forum is dedicated to everything animals, and though it is not, solely, for bereavement purposes, there have been posts in the past from owners whose pets are dying or have died and the replies have been oevrwhelmingly kind and supportive.
Memorial and Help Sites
Helping a Dying Pet
This is a "YouTube" clip that was posted of an excersize for how to help you release your pain and your pet to release it's spirit. Now, I would not find this helpful, but I know that there are many religeons and I want to offer help for different beliefs.
Beyond Indigo
There are several articles on how to cope with losing and the loss of a pet. There are answers to many questions, that will help your grief.
Pet Loss Grief Support Website
Stories, tributes, poetry, and a candlelit ceremony are the purpose for this site. Take the time to peruse it, you may find some comfort.
Pet Loss Support
If you would rather not talk about your loss you will find tips on coping, healing, finding another pet to help fill the void and where to go for help.
My Pet Loss
Another great site with tips and an understand community. Find stories, poems, prayers and ceremonies.
Tracks in the Sand
Find help, tips and a chat room for memorials. My favorite part is their extensive list of links.
Other Breeders and Services
You can find information and links for friends of mine who breed here. If you have any questions please ask. If the names I provide are not of much help to you or if you are in need of items only found online here are some sites that offer links to other kennels and/or sell pet items or services. I do not recommend any of the breeders listed as I do not know them nor have I met them, but I have used these sites in the past and currently; I find them very useful. I have also noticed that the more places you post your puppies or dog the faster you will find them a wonderful home. Note: not all descriptions are written by me but the authors have saved me some time!
Breeder Listings
Puppy Sites
I happen to really like this site. I think I have worked with this one the longest. They are free for a simple listing and charge for bigger and to ad a picture; only one allowed. Even with a free ad this site has been tremendous help.
Dog Breeders Domain
... finding the perfect puppy just got a little easier!
USA Puppy Ads
This is my latest find. I am not sure if the company is new or it just took me awhile to find it, but the search was worth it. There are plenty of ways to advertise your dogs and the site is easy to use and view.
Find Pet Matches
I like using this site, but nearly forgotten about this one and my information was outdated. Luckily, updating it is extremely simple and fast. General listings are free, but there are fees if you want more.
Chaz Hound
Beyond the breeder listings this site has many fun links for you and your pets and a good forum.
American Breeders
One very large breeder link site for all in America breeding dogs, cats, birds or horses. It is free and easy to use as well as having a pretty good audience.
Cool Dog Sites
Information on everything under the sun for your dog as well as the breeder listings. It is easy to use, but can take some time and you will need to register.
Pet People's Place
With everything else this site does, the listings are easy to find and searchers can easily find you.
Find Breeeders
This is a very good breeder listing site. They list kennel name, breeder name, address, and all contact info. Searchers are led to a list of all breeders in their area.
Pet Pages
I have not tried this site, but I would think that the more places you are posted, the better your chances. Listings your website is a $12.00 yearly fee.
Find a Pet
I have not tried this site, but may in the near future. To list your site for 6 months is $29.00 and $49.00 for 1 year.
Quality Dogs
This is a very finicky site and one I agree with. There are several fees based on how long you want your listing to run and how you want it to look. Not all applications are accepted and are posted. It will not help to get angry if they are of the opinion that you do not breed quality pets.
Great Dog Site
Another simple site to add to your list. They are wonderfulyy user friendly without the million pages to sift through before finally finding your destination. I don't know about you, but I am all about simple when I have other responsibilities that keep me hopping. The have information on each breed as well as a scrapbook and question/answer section. Breeders with websites are welcome to link exchange.
Classified Listings
Southeast Classifieds Online
Ads are good for 30 days and easy to post; up to three pictures are encouraged. There are places to post for businesses and other items as well as puppies and rescue animals. Ads are free, but extras have minimal fees.
Pups for Sale
A really great place to post your litters for sale. The ads are free and I was able to post quickly and with pictures. They have sites available for other countries and searching the site is a breeze!
Buy Sell Puppies
This is a site that has only recently been brought to my notice. It is simple, very easy to work with and free including one picture. You will not have trouble here and it will only take minutes to register and then post an ad.
Pets ads
Offers free pet classifieds including one picture and a website link. It is extremely easy to use. You must register first, I promise it is quick and painless.
Hoobly
Yet another good free site for posting classifieds. You can post free pictures that are uploaded to a "vault" on the site in case you use certain pictures repeatedly. You are not able to ad your website, unless I missed it. Watch our for scams. Anyone wanting to pay by cashiers check, money order, western union or anyone not willing to meet you is a must avoid.
Pet Classifieds
Offers free pet classifieds to pet enthusiasts. Ads are fairly easy to place as long as you read everything. I was not very observant posting my first ad. Pictures are extra for a small fee.
The Buy Sell Community
This is another good place to post free ads if you have puppies or dogs looking for a new home. The general ads are free and you are allowed to upload pictures. There are fees applied if you want a link to your website or other services. The registration process can take a little time and the response is not always guaranteed, but I have found homes for puppies here. Just beware inquires that have obviously not read the ad.
Domestic Sale
Also free to post. Many pictures are allowed and it is also very easy to use.
Pet Sell
This one seemed very much like Domestic sale and they may be partners, but I felt it worth my time to post in both places.
Terrific Pets
Not one of my favorite places to place an ad, but many I have talked with have had good response.
Pet Pages
I have not tried this site, but I would think that the more places you are posted, the better your chances. Listings are free.
Pet Finder
I have tried this site, but I was bombarded by scammers. Some people had some luck so it might be worth it.
Pets Online
Another site I have not tried. Listings are free.
Find a Pet
I have not tried this site, but may in the near future. 30 day listings are free, 60 day listings are $10.00.
Quality Dogs
This is a very finicky site and one I agree with. There are several fees based on how long you want your ad to run and how you want it to look. Not all applications are accepted and are posted upon approval. It will not help to get angry if they are of the opinion that you do not breed quality pets so be sure to read their guidelines.
Services and Supplies
Escape the Planet Urine
- Do You Want to Stop a Pet from Peeing? Discuss pet urination problems with an Animal Behavioral Specialist. Get FREE expert help with pet urination problems!
KV Vet
This is one of my favorite sites for vet supplies. Beware that orders under $50.00 will have a $5.00 fee applied, but shipping for most of their items are free. I have spent time comparing prices with other places that don't have the fee, but charge shipping and I save money here.
Revival Animal Health
This is my other favorite site for vet supplies. I will usually purchase half of my stock from KV Vet and the other half from Revival. Working with both companies has been a help to me when I cannot get my supplies locally. I never shop at just one place for everything (NOT a Walmart fan!) so this site should help you find what you need.
Bark Slope
This is a site I was impressed with. They sell some of the more creative and fancier dog items including, canopy beds and costumes. Very unique and worth checking out.
Dog Guard
Leisure Shack offers a wide range of pet products like dog guard for Thule and Mont Blanc. This is a site tht solicited me and I was very excited to add a UK site since making a new friend out there. Enjoy!
DogCollars.org
A good site if you want to just buy a collar and tag and not have to shuffle a large supply site. The site is easy to understand and simple to use.
Amazing Dog Collars
I don't mind providing links for more than one site on any subject since I am a picky shopper. The selection is good and shopping is very easy.
The K9 Index
This is a web directory that I was impressed with and wonderfully enough includes some homeopathic sites.
Dog Beds
Find the perfect dog bed. Many different types of dog beds to choose from for any size dog. Visit us for the largest selection of wholesale and discount dog beds. View our pet store for thousands of pet supply products.
Custom Dog Tags, Pet ID Tags
Sells a very wide range of Pet Id tags, both generic and custom, with free shipping.
The Best Animal Sites on the Web
Offers links to other sites for all types of pets and service sites.
Beware these sites
These sites can be considered on my black list. I am not telling you to boycott them, whether or not you visit them is entirely up to you. I will warn you that I have had very good reason to find real fault.
The Pet Forum
I originally suggested this site as a great place to find answers from other pet owners. Recently, I read a thread by a breeder with a pregnant bitch who was not eating. The breeder was immediately barraged by rude and callus individuals. I expressed my concern for the lack of control on the account of the moderators to the site manager. I felt they had failed to stem the tide of cruelty. I received only an apology that I had been offended, but seeing as how a vet was necessary, the moderator had no reason to jump in or discipline any of it's posters except for the one who had originally asked for help. I have taken pictures of the thread and you can see them here. I was relieved to see one caring individual who had taken the time to put their thoughts into space, only, after thinking of the individual's feelings. If the original poster ever happens to visit this site, I hope they will allow me to say how mortified I was that there were so many careless individuals in one place.
*I would like to furnish sites dedicated to breeding instruction, understanding diseases, showing, grooming, or anything else that you feel will help those visiting this site. If anyone is successful in finding a site that instructs rather than rebukes those who want to breed please let me know and I will view the site and add it here as well as any sites that are a good source of information for all. If any of the sites I have listed upset you for any reason I would like to know about it. In looking for instructional materials I have learned that most pages, including mine, start with whether or not you should breed. If you have been through this all before please don't let it upset you as that info is there for those still deciding. Just be prepared to do some skipping.
There is at least one wonderful book that has been a great inspiration although I have mentioned several here. I understand that others are trying to stop unprofessional and irresponsible breeding by simply telling you not to breed. But for those of us that aren't blind, it is going to continue if there are not proper educational materials available to everyone. I would like to hope that, with education, the ill breeding of dogs will be reduced.
My hope is that the information I provide is helpful. If so please sign my Guestbook.
*If you see any discrepancies or if you know of a website that is not listed here please email me at The Georgia Shih Tzu
